Founded in 1921 the Hebrew Theological College stands before you. Its story begins not in Skokie but in Chicago’s West Side. Imagine Rabbi Saul Silber a key figure in its early years. He envisioned a college training Orthodox rabbis. This was revolutionary requiring a baccalaureate degree before ordination. The college’s growth and Chicago’s changing demographics led to a move. In 1958 the Hebrew Theological College relocated to its current Skokie location. This wasn’t just a move it was a pivotal moment. The college expanded adding the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences later renamed by William and Lilian Kanter. A high school was also opened serving students from across the country. The women’s program the Anne M Blitstein Teachers Institute for Women initially a part-time program blossomed into a full-time college. In 1994 a second campus opened in West Rogers Park. The Hebrew Theological College became fully accredited by the North Central Association in 1997 a testament to its academic rigor. In 2015 a significant chapter unfolded. It joined the Touro College and University System expanding its reach and resources. The Hebrew Theological College today stands as a vibrant institution combining tradition with modern education. It prepares students for leadership and service in Jewish communities worldwide. It’s a testament to the vision of its founders and the dedication of its faculty and students.
