Beneath the surface of this unassuming green space lies a history waiting to be uncovered. We are standing at Heavers Meadow in Selhurst. This land has a past far richer than you might imagine. Heavers Meadow spans over eight acres. It offers a green escape in this busy corner of London.

In 1935, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners granted this land. It was given to the Croydon Corporation. The land would be used as an open space, recreation ground, and allotments. This act secured Heavers Meadow as a space for public enjoyment. Before the 20th century, this area looked quite different. The western side of Heavers Meadow was once a wood. It was known as Dragnet Wood in 1800. By 1867, it was called Selhurst Wood. Railway development split the wood into two parts.

Today, the railway offers convenient access. Commuters use Heavers Meadow to get to Selhurst railway station. It is a quick route to Victoria for those living near Tennison Road. A footpath cuts through the meadow. Cyclists favor this path. There is no gate on the Tennison Road side. This means the meadow remains open even at night.

The Norbury Brook flows along the south side of Heavers Meadow. It runs northwest before disappearing under Selhurst Road. The brook reappears in Thornton Heath Recreation Ground. It also runs behind some houses in between. The brook is fenced off for safety. Rainfall can cause water levels to rise quickly. The water drains from surrounding areas.

Heavers Meadow has been a site for community events. In June 2022, a Jubilee celebration was held here. It was a family day. The event included freebies, games, food, and bouncy castles. Arts and crafts stalls added to the fun. Live musical performances entertained the crowds.

Interestingly, the Croydon Canal once cut through this area. This canal crossing created a flood meadow. It proved an expensive failure. Yet, the meadows remain lovely. You can see squidgy pools and stalky willows here. Yellow marsh flowers add to the scenery. A grating draws off water into the culvert after heavy rain.

While walking through Heavers Meadow, think about its transformations. From a wooded area to a public space. It has always adapted to serve the community. It is a reminder of the area’s history. Heavers Meadow continues to provide a valuable green space for everyone.
