Heath Reserve is your starting point. Imagine standing here on Exmouth Road. You can park your car easily. Then you’ll begin your walk along a path around the crater. The path is mostly flat. There are a few ups and downs though. It’s a mix of boardwalk grassy and gravel surfaces. Be prepared for mud. Even on a dry day the path can be quite muddy.
This isn’t just any walk. It’s a walk through history. A walk around a massive volcanic crater. The crater is filled with a mangrove-filled salt marsh. It’s a unique ecosystem. This 2.3 kilometer walk takes about an hour. It’s a good place to walk your dog. It is a dedicated dog exercise area in fact. After your walk you can retrace your steps. Alternatively you can climb the bank. Then you can reach Akoranga Drive. That’s another way to exit the reserve.
