Amidst London’s vibrant streets stands a silent witness to a crucial chapter of World War II. The Headquarters of the Polish Navy Plaque commemorates the Polish Navy’s wartime home.

From 1939 to 1945, this building at 51 New Cavendish Street served as the nerve center for Polish naval operations. Can you picture the scene? Polish officers huddled over maps, strategizing against Nazi aggression.

Vice Admiral Jerzy Swirski Commander of the Polish Navy led from here. In October 1939, he arrived in London to rebuild the Navy’s management after the German invasion. Imagine the weight of responsibility on his shoulders.

The Polish Navy played a vital role alongside the Royal Navy. They covered over 1.2 million nautical miles. They escorted 787 convoys. They carried out 1,162 combat patrols and operations.

The Polish Navy sank approximately 100,000 tons of enemy shipping. This included two U-boats and 39 transports. They also shot down 20 aircraft. The cost was high. 404 Polish sailors lost their lives.

Initially numbering only 1,000 in 1939, the Polish Navy grew to 4,000 by 1945. Polish servicewomen known as ‘mewki’ or little seagulls provided crucial shore support. This freed up men for combat.

The Polish Navy participated in key battles. These included the Battle of the Atlantic, Narvik, and Dunkirk. Polish ships also fought in the Allied Invasion of Sicily and the Normandy Landings.

Several ships built in the UK were transferred to the Polish Navy. These included ORP Dragon, ORP Conrad, ORP Krakowiak, and ORP Orkan. These ships played important roles in convoy escorts and combat operations.

The plaque was erected on November 28, 2013. This marked the 95th anniversary of the modern Polish Navy’s birth. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland and the Polish Heritage Society UK collaborated on the memorial.

The Headquarters of the Polish Navy Plaque stands as a testament to Polish courage. It honors their contribution to Allied victory. It reminds us of the strong bond between Poland and the United Kingdom during a time of crisis.

Take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made within these walls. Remember the Polish sailors who fought bravely for freedom far from their homeland. Their legacy lives on.
