Why is Hazeltine Lake sometimes referred to as the “other” Hazeltine? We’re standing on the shores of Hazeltine Lake in Chaska, Minnesota. This beautiful body of water is more than just a scenic spot. It played a pivotal role in the naming of one of golf’s most prestigious venues: Hazeltine National Golf Club. The lake inherited its name from the Hazeltine family, pioneers who left an indelible mark on this region. The most notable member of the family was Susan Hazeltine, a woman of remarkable character who became the first schoolteacher in Carver County back in 1855. In a testament to her impact, another lake nearby, Lake Susan, was also named in her honor. Now, back to the golf. When the idea of creating a world-class golf course emerged, the founders sought a name that would embody both the beauty and the legacy of the area. Hazeltine Lake, with its connection to the pioneering spirit of the Hazeltine family, became the perfect muse. And so, the famous Hazeltine National Golf Club, gracefully flanking the shores of this very lake, came to be. The next time you hear whispers of Hazeltine, remember this tranquil lake.
