While its history stretches back to 1872, it was originally known as Linton Wesleyan Church. The church was built during a time of great growth and expansion in Victoria, a period when many small settlements were springing up throughout the state. The land it stands upon was initially purchased from Henry Walker for the remarkable sum of 10 shillings.

Eventually, the name was abbreviated to Hazelglen and the entire suburb adopted the name. Unfortunately, the church was sold in 2022, but its legacy continues to live on in the name of the community.
