“Is this the church that used to be called ‘Solid Rock’?” a curious visitor might ask, peering up at the unassuming facade of Hazel Green Baptist Church. Hazel Green Baptist Church in Alsip, Illinois has worn many names over the years, a testament to its enduring presence in the community. It all began as a mission in Blue Island under the guidance of Calvary Baptist Church in Harvey. From humble beginnings in a Masonic Temple, a dedicated group of eleven souls formally established the Blue Island Missionary Baptist Church in June 1951. As the congregation expanded, so too did their need for a larger space. Their journey led them to Hazelgreen, Illinois where they purchased property on W 115th Street. It was during this transition that the church adopted the name Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, only to later embrace the name Hazelgreen Missionary Baptist Church in 1960. Throughout its existence, Hazel Green Baptist Church has been a beacon of faith, evolving and adapting to meet the needs of its community. The church has seen its share of transformations, from expansions and renovations to even mergers with other congregations, such as the Landmark Baptist church in 2003. Yet, through it all, the spirit of faith and service has remained a constant, reminding us that some things transcend the passage of time and the changing of names. Hazel Green Baptist Church stands as a testament to that enduring truth.
