Established in 1848 Hays County boasts a rich history. It was carved from Travis County and named for the legendary Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays. Imagine a time before sprawling suburbs. Picture pioneers settling along Onion Creek and the San Marcos and Blanco Rivers. The 1850 census recorded a mere 387 residents. San Marcos was the sole town then. Other settlements like Driftwood and Dripping Springs emerged later.

Hays County flourished after the Civil War. The 1881 arrival of the railroad connected it to major Texas cities and beyond. This spurred immense growth. The 20th century saw the founding of a state normal school. It later became Southwest Texas State University. This institution educated Lyndon Baines Johnson the 36th president of the United States. Agriculture and ranching remained cornerstones of the local economy. However light manufacturing education and tourism increasingly contributed to the county’s progress.

Did you know that evidence of Paleo-Indians has been found in Hays County dating back as far as 6000 BC? Native agriculture thrived here by 1200 AD. Long before Anglo-American settlers arrived Spanish explorers and missionaries traversed this land. Figures like Father Isidro Félix de Espinosa and Louis Juchereau de St. Denis left their marks. The Spanish Empire’s presence is evidenced by the establishment of Mission San Francisco Xavier de los Dolores in 1755. It was built amongst the Apache. Mexican land grants were issued in the 1830s to individuals such as Juan Martín de Veramendi and Thomas Jefferson Chambers. This paved the way for early Anglo-American settlement.

Early settlers faced challenges. French-Canadian explorer Louis Juchereau de St Denis was attacked by Comanches in 1714. The Texas-Comanche Wars of the 1800s profoundly shaped the county’s early years. In 1861 Hays County residents voted in favor of secession from the Union. Cattle drives to Kansas started in 1867. The county courthouse built in 1908 showcases Beaux-Arts architecture. Aquarena Springs a popular tourist attraction opened in 1928. Wonder Cave opened to the public in 1900. San Marcos Army Air Field later renamed Gary Air Force Base played a role in World War II.
