The Haynie Chapel Methodist Church Plaque is a historical landmark in Austin, Texas, and is a silent witness to more than a century of community and faith. The plaque was erected in 1964. Standing here now, we are facing a piece of history that is a testament to a man named Reverend John Haynie, who played a significant role in early Texas history in the 1800s. Reverend Haynie was a pioneer minister who is said to have been the very first Protestant minister to preach in Travis County. It was in 1839 that he founded this church, laying the foundation for the Haynie Chapel United Methodist Church. He also performed the first documented marriage in Travis County. The original log house was built near Houston Springs as the first place of worship. It was moved to a cemetery location in 1876 when the original church was torn down. When the cemetery became full in 1907, the church was moved to its current location. Today, Haynie Chapel is a thriving church. This plaque commemorates Haynie’s legacy and the enduring spirit of faith that has defined the Haynie Chapel community for generations. The plaque stands as a reminder of the rich history of this church. It reminds us of the importance of faith, hard work, and community in building a strong society.
