Established in 1965 Hawaii Pacific University HPU boasts a rich history. It started as Hawaii Pacific College. Four visionaries Eureka Forbes Paul CT Loo Elizabeth W Kellerman and Reverend Edmond Walker secured its charter. Their dream a private liberal arts college in Honolulu became reality.

HPU’s growth was remarkable. In 1966 Honolulu Christian College joined forces. Dr James L Meader became the first president. He shaped its educational program. His successor George A Warmer expanded the liberal arts and cooperative education.

The 1970s brought significant milestones. HPU graduated its first class in 1972. A School of Business Administration opened. Full accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges followed in 1973. The college flourished under Chatt G Wright its third president. Graduate programs launched. HPU transitioned into a university in 1990.

Hawaii Loa College merged with HPU in 1992. This expanded HPU’s presence. The Oceanic Institute a marine research center became affiliated in 2003. This enriched research opportunities for students. HPU’s athletic teams known as the Sharks compete in the NCAA Division II.

In 2004 HPU’s International Vocal Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall. This showcased HPU’s vibrant arts scene. The Aloha Tower Marketplace became a central part of HPU’s downtown campus in 2015. It combines student housing retail and community spaces. The university also operates campuses on Oahu’s military bases.

HPU prides itself on its diverse student body. Students come from all 50 states and nearly 80 countries. It offers a variety of programs including business marine sciences liberal arts and more. Its commitment to academics and its international reach have cemented its position as a leading university in the Pacific. HPU is more than a university it’s a vibrant community a testament to its founders’ vision.
