Nestled between two distinct residential areas near shops and schools sits Havering Road Methodist Church. Locals affectionately call it “Havering Rd.” This isn’t just a church. It’s a story woven into the fabric of the community since 1957. The first structure on this site wasn’t the church you see today. It was a simple hall, erected quickly as a “Rema building.” This hall hosted morning worship and afternoon Sunday School. The current church building, a modern and versatile space filled with light, was added in 1974. But the story doesn’t end there. In 2018, “The Hub” was built. This addition connected the original hall and the church, creating a unified space and improving accessibility. The result is a welcoming area that opens into all parts of the building, enabling greater community activity. Havering Road Methodist Church’s history is one of evolution and growth. It started with a donated plot of land from Mr. Thomas England. The original hall, now a beloved part of the church’s history, was dedicated in December 1957. By 1968, the congregation had outgrown the hall. Discussions began about expanding the premises, eventually leading to the construction of the separate church building in 1974. Two decades later, a growing Sunday School necessitated further expansion. A portacabin was added in 1991, providing much-needed space for teenagers. The church continued to adapt, expanding its kitchen and addressing structural issues. In 2018, “The Hub” realized a long-held vision of a unified, versatile space for worship and community engagement. Havering Road Methodist Church stands on the corner of Havering Road and Moray Way, across from a row of shops with a Co-op and a popular fish and chip shop. The church also boasts a convenient car park and is accessible by the 103 and 499 bus routes from Romford. This is more than just a building. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Havering Road Methodist Church continues to serve its neighborhood, offering a space for worship, connection, and discovery. It’s a place where, every week, the congregation declares, “God is here, His spirit is with us.”
