Upon this very ground stood mighty palaces. Havering-Atte-Bower whispers tales of royalty. For centuries this village nestled in the heart of Essex held a special place in English history.

Havering-Atte-Bower boasts a rich heritage. It’s a place where Saxon settlers once built their homes. Roman activity left its mark. Archaeological digs revealed pottery and evidence of metalworking. A Roman villa or similar structure may have existed here.

Edward the Confessor established a hunting lodge. It later grew into a grand palace. Some believe he died within its walls before his burial at Westminster Abbey. This is disputed however. Havering-Atte-Bower’s royal connection continued. The Domesday Book lists King Harold and King William as owners. The village thrived with 45 households and 100 acres of meadowland. Woodland and a mill completed the landscape.

Royalty favored Havering Palace. They added architectural styles of their era. Havering Palace eventually fell into disrepair. It was demolished. Pyrgo Palace another royal residence was built nearby. Henry VIII purchased it to replace the aging Havering Palace. Pyrgo too eventually met its end. Only plans of the original Havering Palace survive thanks to a 1578 survey by Lord Burghley.

Havering-Atte-Bower sits on high ground. The views are spectacular. You can see east London Essex and Kent. Three large parks surround the village. Havering Country Park contains one of only two redwood plantations in England. Redwoods were imported from California. Bedfords Park and Pyrgo Park complete the green spaces. Bower House built in 1729 stands as a testament to the past. It was constructed using materials from the former Havering Palace.

The village green displays original village stocks. Across the road lies the Ducking Pond. Legend says it was used for witch trials. Evidence is lacking however. A ducking stool replica is planned.

Havering-Atte-Bower’s story is one of transformation. From a Saxon settlement to a royal center it’s a place with enduring charm. Its history is reflected in its landscape and buildings. The village remains a peaceful haven with a vibrant past.
