Did the scent of fermenting grapes ever lead you to a hidden gem? Haus Lotter in Radebeul whispers stories of Saxon winemaking. This charming half-timbered house, built around 1580, isn’t just a pretty facade. It’s a time capsule preserving centuries of viticultural tradition. Haus Lotter takes its name from Alfred Lotter, a watchmaker who set up shop here in the 1920s. But long before ticking clocks filled its rooms, the house belonged to winemakers. Records from 1691 link the house to the Schiffer family, with ties to the Amtsschreiber of Stolpen. Over time, military officers and wealthy families called Haus Lotter home. In the 18th century, Captain Christian Ehrenreich Schaffer enjoyed it as a summer retreat. Haus Lotter’s architecture tells a tale of growth. Three distinct sections, each built in a different era, blend together. The oldest part, from 1580, displays dark grey beams. A 1614 addition features lighter grey beams. The youngest section, around 1700, shows off yellow beams outlined in red. Inside, remnants of murals in the grand Winzersaal, dating back to 1650 and 1710, hint at past artistry. A restored balcony and staircase on the south side once served as the only entrance to the upper floor. Now, a convenient internal staircase complements it. The original wine press and black kitchen remind us of Haus Lotter’s roots in winemaking. The Radebeuler Bauherrenpreis, awarded for its careful restoration, recognizes its value. The house’s beautiful garden adds to its charm. In 2017, a Dresden family purchased Haus Lotter after years of vacancy. They’ve preserved its history while giving it a new purpose. Lotter’s former workshop is now a holiday retreat. The Winzersaal, once again a music room, echoes with the family’s melodies, blending history with their passion. Haus Lotter invites you to step back in time. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine seamlessly. Let the creaking floorboards and the rustling vines weave their magic as you become a part of Haus Lotter’s ongoing story.
