You see it there, right in front of you? The Haus im Schluh – a quaint half-timbered building nestled among the trees, its thatched roof whispering centuries-old stories. Martha Vogeler, wife of the famed artist Heinrich Vogeler, built this house in 1920, a place for her and her three daughters after their separation from Heinrich. It was more than just a home, though. Martha brought with her many of Heinrich’s paintings and furniture from their previous home, the Barkenhoff. She even used her house to display his work, creating early on a museum dedicated to him. The Haus im Schluh also housed a hand-weaving workshop, where Martha created beautiful tapestries using old looms. Isn’t it intriguing that this house was originally a farmhouse from the nearby village of Grasdorf? In 1920, it was moved piece by piece to Worpswede, a testament to the love Martha had for this house and its potential to be a cultural center.
