Amidst the charming streets of Bremen-Vegesack stands Haus Dr. Pickel. Do you see its striking cubic form? Haus Dr. Pickel, located at Sagerstraße 26 (formerly Bismarckstraße), isn’t just another building. It’s a testament to the innovative spirit of the New Building style. Constructed in 1931, Haus Dr. Pickel served as both a doctor’s office and a home for dentist Ferdinand Pickel. The architect, Ernst Becker-Sassenhof, also designed notable landmarks in Bremen like the Haus am Wasser, the Vegesack Cemetery Chapel, and the Haus Grohne. Haus Dr. Pickel stands out with its two and three-story plastered, cubic structure. It features a two-story annex, which becomes single-story at the back. The Bremen State Office for Monument Preservation recognized its architectural significance. They described it as a “building with clear, cubic forms, staggered and maintained in graphic rigor.” Its widely overhanging flat roofs and asymmetrical arrangement of diverse window formats make it a rare example of New Building in Bremen. Since 1994, Haus Dr. Pickel has held a place on Bremen’s monument protection list. Its enduring presence reminds us of a time when modern architecture was just beginning to shape the city’s landscape. It is a concrete representation of the forward-thinking vision of its creator, Dr. Pickel, and architect Becker-Sassenhof.
