Did you know that Haus Hansestadt Danzig, also known as Haus 66 Engelsgrube, has a fascinating story? This building has witnessed centuries of history. It stands as a testament to Lübeck’s rich Hanseatic past.

Let’s step back in time to the 12th century. Lübeck was founded in 1143. This area became a bustling hub for merchants. In 1259, the street “Engelsche Grove” was mentioned. This was the quarter for ship owners trading with England.

By 1310, Haus 66 Engelsgrube was first recorded in Lübeck’s archives. Imagine the deals struck within its walls. Picture the goods traded. This warehouse played a vital role in the city’s commercial life.

Fast forward to 1630. Haus 66 Engelsgrube was noted as “Rotbruhuus”. It was a brewhouse for brown beer. Thirsty merchants must have appreciated this stop.

The Hanseatic League shaped Lübeck’s destiny. In 1356, the first Hanseatic Day took place here. Lübeck became the league’s administrative center in 1358. Haus 66 would have been in the middle of it all. Though the League dissolved in 1669, Lübeck remained a key Baltic port.

However, the 20th century brought upheaval. After World War II, Gdansk’s German inhabitants faced flight and expulsion in 1945.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1980, an association of former Gdansk citizens acquired the dilapidated Engelsgrube 66. These determined individuals formed the Danziger Foerderkreis e.V. They began to reconstruct the property.

Their hard work paid off. In 1983, the “HAUS HANSESTADT DANZIG” opened. It included a museum, offices, and apartments. This marked a rebirth for Haus 66.

In 1987, the house gained UNESCO World Heritage status. This recognized its historical and cultural significance.

More recently, in 2011, the non-profit HAUS HANSESTADT DANZIG foundation was established. In 2013, the foundation acquired the property. Extensive renovations occurred in 2022.

Today, Haus Hansestadt Danzig stands as a museum. It provides insights into Danzig’s culture up to the end of World War II. The building itself is a brick structure dating back to the late 13th century.

Consider visiting the Museum Haus Hansestadt Danzig. Experience the history within its walls. Reflect on the stories of merchants and Gdansk citizens. Haus 66 Engelsgrube is more than just a building. It is a living reminder of Lübeck’s past and its connection to the Hanseatic world.
