“A granite block crowned by a helmet” This is how the Hauptmann-Hirsch-Denkmal once appeared. It stands as a poignant reminder of Hauptmann Johann Baptista Joseph Hirsch a highly decorated Saxon artillery officer. He died tragically in 1822 after a riding accident right here on the Heller.

This monument is more than just a stone. It’s a testament to a brave soldier. Hirsch distinguished himself repeatedly in the Napoleonic Wars. He even received the St Heinrichs Order a prestigious military award. This is a man who fought bravely for his country. He served under difficult conditions such as the disastrous Russian campaign of 1812. He later switched sides during the Battle of Leipzig. He fought alongside the allies. He was a respected and admired officer.

His comrades erected this memorial in 1823. They placed it near the very spot where he met his untimely end. The original monument was a large granite block. It rested on a pyramid-shaped base. A large iron helmet crowned the top. The inscription read DEM KOEN SAECHS HAUPTMANN DES ARTILLERIE CORPS UND RITTER DES SANCT HEINRICHS ORDENS J B J HIRSCH VON SEINEN TRAUERNDEN WAFFENBRUEDERN D 7 OCTOBER 1822. This translates to “To the Royal Saxon Captain of the Artillery Corps and Knight of the Order of St Heinrich JB J Hirsch from his grieving comrades 7 October 1822”.

Unfortunately the Denkmal suffered greatly throughout the years. It was moved damaged and even partially buried. In 1974 construction work almost completely destroyed it. Thanks to the efforts of an amateur monument preserver Johannes Ziller it was recovered. In 1976/77 the monument was given a new location and a replacement helmet from another grave. Vandalism in 1991 caused further damage. The replacement helmet was lost.

However the story of the Hauptmann-Hirsch-Denkmal doesn’t end in ruin. In 2018 a vocational training center restored it. They painstakingly recreated the helmet from clay. The revitalized monument stands proudly once more. The original inscription remains. New additions mark its restorations. Now the Denkmal serves not only as a tribute to a courageous soldier but also a symbol of resilience and community spirit. We stand here today before a symbol of history. It is a testament to courage perseverance and the enduring bonds of comradeship.
