What secrets does the Hauptkanal hold? The Hauptkanal in Bremerhaven whispers stories of a bygone era. A time when Bremerhaven and Geestemünde were rivals. Bremerhaven, founded in 1827, needed a seaport. The Hauptkanal became part of this vital artery. It was constructed between 1860 and 1862, along with the Querkanal and the main basin of the Handelshafen (commercial harbor). The Hauptkanal, now partially transformed into a yacht harbor on its eastern end, initially served as a connection to the Petroleumhafen and the Holzhafen. Imagine the hustle and bustle as ships navigated these waters. These ships carried timber, petroleum, and the dreams of a burgeoning port city. The Hauptkanal sliced through the main road connecting Geestemünde’s market square to its train station. This necessitated the construction of a Drehbrücke, a swing bridge. This bridge was designed by Heinrich Adolf Buchholz, the same engineer behind the Hauptkanal itself. Built between 1860 and 1861 by the Harkot company, this steel marvel spanned 45 meters. It rested on three piers, with a central rotating mechanism. Three workers manually operated the bridge. They allowed ships to pass and then reconnected the road for horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians. Think of the creaking of the gears, the splash of water, and the shouts of the workers as the bridge swung open. In 1881, Bremerhaven’s tramway began traversing the Drehbrücke. This continued until 1964 when a new route was established. The bus line 510 also crossed this bridge until 2000. The Hauptkanal and its Drehbrücke remained crucial links in Bremerhaven’s growth. They stand today as testaments to the city’s rich maritime history. They are reminders of the engineering ingenuity that shaped Bremerhaven’s development.
