Gazing at Hatch End Free Church, one can almost hear the echoes of its vibrant past. Hatch End Free Church stands as a testament to the growth and changing needs of the Hatch End community. In the 1930s, Hatch End experienced rapid development, transforming from a small village to a bustling suburb. The area between The Avenue, Uxbridge Road, and Rowlands Avenue saw a surge in new homes, creating a need for a place of worship for the growing population. The Hatch End Free Church, initially conceived as a hall, was established to serve this burgeoning community. The church hall first opened its doors on May 2nd, 1936. Mrs. Black, wife of a prominent supporter, formally unlocked the doors, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the area. The official opening ceremony, presided over by Dr. Gibbons of Wealdstone, featured a sermon by the President of the London Baptist Association and greetings from local ministers, including the Vicar of St Anselm’s. The day concluded with a traditional church tea, symbolizing community and fellowship. The instrumental figure in the church’s founding was Mr. Cyril Black, later Sir Cyril, MP for Wimbledon. A distinguished Baptist himself, he and his brother rallied potential members and oversaw the hall’s construction. Even after its opening, Mr. Black continued his unwavering support. He journeyed from Surrey every Sunday to lead services until the church appointed its first minister. On September 6th, 1936, with a founding membership of 24 individuals, the Hatch End Baptist Church was formally constituted. The initial vision for the church included the eventual construction of a dedicated sanctuary. This vision was realized decades later with the opening of the new sanctuary in 1972. In a more recent development, Hatch End Baptist Church merged with Pinner Baptist Church in October 2024. This union created one church across two locations, signifying a continued evolution in the story of Hatch End Free Church. The merger was commemorated with a special service at the Paines Lane site, celebrating the rich history of both churches and looking forward to a shared future of service and community engagement.
