Harxheim a winegrowing village boasts a rich past. Its earliest mention dates back to 767. The ending heim suggests a Frankish founding. Evidence of Frankish settlement even predates that. A now-buried cemetery testifies to it.

Throughout the Middle Ages monasteries like Lorsch Fulda and Otterberg held properties in Harxheim. Later the village fell under the rule of the Counts of Falkenstein. Unlike many other Rhineland-Palatinate communities Harxheim embraced the Reformation early. After belonging to the County of Falkenstein which was part of Austria Harxheim became part of the French Republic in 1801.
