A symphony of steel and glass. That’s what the Harwood Center looks like. You are standing before the 21st-tallest building in Dallas. It stretches 483 feet into the Texas sky. The Harwood Center was completed in 1982. It was originally known as the Olympia & York Tower. This was a nod to its developer, Olympia & York Developments Ltd. The architecture, a striking blend of gray-white granite and dark glass, is the brainchild of WZMH Architects. You might recognize their handiwork. They also designed the iconic CN Tower in Toronto. Now, look closely at the Harwood Center. Notice how the building seems to be composed of two distinct towers, one 34 stories and the other 36, separated by a subtle vertical indentation. That unique design is more than just aesthetics. It maximizes corner office space, a prized feature in the world of commercial real estate. But here’s something you might not expect. Hidden beneath the Harwood Center, Federal Street flows through a tunnel. This architectural feat speaks to the history of this place. The Harwood Center stands on ground that was once part of a vibrant commercial hub. In fact, it stood adjacent to the historic Dallas Cotton Exchange Building. This building was demolished in 1994.
