Remember those hastily built wooden structures? Harvey Road Primary School’s early days were a testament to resilience. Opened in 1938 it initially housed older children in what was nicknamed ‘the cowshed’. This temporary building served the school until a permanent structure could be built. Harvey Road Primary School wasn’t just a school it was a community hub.

The school’s history is rich with stories of adaptation and community spirit. World War II brought air raid shelters and the daily routine of fire drills. Children carried gas masks and sang songs to keep their spirits up during air raids. Food was delivered daily by lorry because the school lacked a kitchen. The school even shared its space with evacuees from London. Local children attended in the mornings while evacuees learned in the afternoon.

The challenges were immense but Harvey Road Primary School persevered. A canteen and dining room were eventually built in 1948. New classrooms and a library were added in 1956. This brought all pupils aged seven to eleven under one roof. The school even boasted sporting achievements like the boys’ football shield win in 1951 and the netball team’s league championship in 1958. The school’s 21st anniversary was celebrated in 1960.

Harvey Road Primary School is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a place where generations of children learned and grew. The school’s evolution reflects the changing times and the resilience of the community. The air raid shelters are long gone. Replaced by a vibrant school that continues to shape young lives. They even created a garden in 1972 where one of the shelters had been. The children’s dedication won them a prize. The school celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014. Harvey Road Primary School is a landmark in the community. It reflects the strength and spirit of its people. It’s a story of perseverance adaptation and enduring community spirit.
