Deep in Zilker Botanical Garden lies a portal to the past: the Hartman Prehistoric Garden. Imagine Austin 70 million years ago. A shallow sea is receding, revealing a landscape populated by ferns, horsetails, and towering conifers. Dinosaurs roam freely, leaving their footprints in the soft limestone. The Hartman Prehistoric Garden recreates this prehistoric world. It stands on the very spot where, in 1992, over 100 dinosaur footprints were discovered. These tracks, made by the Ornithomimus, a bird-like dinosaur, were carefully preserved by reburial, and the garden was built above them as a living monument to Austin’s ancient history. In the heart of the garden, a life-sized bronze Ornithomimus stands guard. It’s a dramatic centerpiece, surrounded by lush plantings designed to evoke the Cretaceous period. The garden’s designers chose plants whose lineages stretch back to the time of the dinosaurs. Palms, cycads, ginkgos, and magnolias flourish here, creating a landscape both beautiful and educational. A waterfall cascades down a rocky slope, feeding a stream that meanders through the garden. Replicas of the original dinosaur footprints are scattered along the paths, inviting visitors to walk in the footsteps of giants. The Hartman Prehistoric Garden isn’t just a beautiful collection of plants. It’s a story told in stone and bronze, in the rustling leaves of ancient trees. It’s a reminder that even in the heart of a modern city, the echoes of the distant past can still be heard.
