Thirty-two million pounds. That’s how much the transformation of Harris Academy South Norwood cost. A stunning sum for a school. But what did it buy?
Harris Academy South Norwood isn’t just a school. It’s a story of transformation. It stands on the site of the old Stanley Technical School for Boys. Founded in 1907 by William Ford Stanley it was originally a trade school. It was a boys-only school for many years. In 2007 the school was completely redeveloped. It reopened as Harris Academy South Norwood a co-educational academy.
This wasn’t just a renovation. It was a rebirth. The new building boasts state-of-the-art facilities. There are drama facilities. There are art and design studios. Smartboards are in every classroom. A new sixth form was added. It caters to 300 students offering both academic and vocational subjects. The Academy even features a stunning new building.
The transformation wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the students. It’s about the remarkable achievements of students like Alan. He achieved the highest GCSE History mark in the entire country. Or Shea and Christine who earned places at Oxbridge. The school’s science team achieved the best GCSE results in the whole Harris Federation. The dedication and talent are exceptional. The school is immensely proud of these students.
The Academy also embraces its connection to the community. The redesign of the Goathouse Bridge is an example. It’s a finalist for the Inspire Future Generations Award 2024. It’s a beautiful mural. It was a collaborative project between the school and South Norwood Regeneration Project. The project showcases the talent and ambition of students and staff. It helped connect the school to the wider community.
Harris Academy South Norwood is more than just a building. It’s a testament to dedication. It’s a breeding ground for talent. It’s a community. It’s a place where students achieve amazing things. It’s a place where students from years 9 to their final year thrive. It’s a school that helps unlock potential. A happy and welcoming school where friendships are made. It is a school full of bright futures.
