Question What if a building could be more than just classrooms? What if it could be a launchpad for innovation? That is what the Harney Science Center is. It is an academic stage for real-time problem-solving.

The University of San Francisco’s Harney Science Center houses the Innovation Hive. The Hive is a makerspace. It allows students to test their ideas through hands-on creation. Think of it as a model R&D center. Here students can become the professionals they aspire to be.

The 7600-square-foot Innovation Hive is the first phase of a full Harney Science Center renovation. This space launched USF’s engineering program. It enabled new engineering degree programs. These programs are within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Architects assessed the existing building. They wanted to understand its capacity for new programs. The renovation honors the original structure. It reinvents collaborative spaces. These spaces strengthen the connection between teachers and students.

The Innovation Hive is on the entry level. It welcomes visitors. It creates a sense of community. Students, staff, and faculty collaborate here. They work together on shared projects. It is a hands-on learning environment. The collaboration space supports different learning styles. It offers flexible seating and lounges. Students can choose the best space for any task.

The Harney Science Center also houses science labs. You can find faculty offices here. There is the Fletcher Jones Microscopy Center. Also find the Kudlick Interactive Classroom. This classroom is for computer science only. It has plasma screens and computers. Every station has one.

Other facilities at USF include the Data Institute. They educate data scientists. The Geospatial Analysis Lab studies geographic information. The Green Room is a maker space breakout room. Lo Schiavo Science Center revolutionizes science and math programs. MAGICS Lab focuses on machine learning. Maker Shops feature a scene shop and props lab. The Media Lab has video and audio production facilities. XARTS Studios have classrooms for Architecture and Fine Arts.

Flad Architects designed the Innovation Hive. It is a thoughtful space. Glass walls and windows connect the spaces. This creates physical and visual connections. The design supports many learning styles. It includes AV/IT support and technology. Marker boards are available. Seating is flexible. These features support student energy levels.

The Harney Science Center is not just a building. It is a place where ideas come to life. It is where the next generation of innovators is born.
