The stones whisper tales. Stand before Harlev Kirke. Feel its ancient presence. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to time. Harlev Kirke’s story unfolds through centuries. Its origins trace back to around 1070. The initial structure a simple Romanesque design. It comprised only a nave and a choir. They built it using rough-hewn materials. These included red and grey-colored stones. Also limestone and granite. The original ceiling was a simple timber construction.
Later centuries saw significant changes. The late Middle Ages brought additions. A sturdy west tower was added. This later collapsed in 1861. A new tower replaced it in 1862. A south-facing vestry also became part of Harlev Kirke. It was reconstructed in 1756 boasting a Baroque style. The original vaulted ceilings were largely replaced. Only those over the nave remain from the Gothic era. The weight of the new vaulted ceilings required support. Seven imposing buttresses now grace the exterior. They testify to the church’s architectural evolution.
Harlev Kirke’s history isn’t only about bricks and mortar. The church’s condition deteriorated after the Reformation. A section of the vault and the tower collapsed mid-1800s. This triggered major renovations between 1862 and 1863. During the restoration they added the buttresses. Traces of several periods of kalkmalerier remain. These are the fragments of murals. They remind us of the church’s rich past.
The church boasts a Romanesque baptismal font. It’s made of granite. There’s a 16th-century brass baptismal bowl. The altar is a 1592 catechism painting. The pulpit is a work by a local carpenter Morten from Skovby. Created around 1600 it speaks to craftsmanship. The Swedish wars saw the loss of the church’s chalice and paten. Replacements were briefly used. A new chalice was crafted by the goldsmith Clemens Sørensen of Aarhus in 1687.
