Haret Hreik

During the 2006 Lebanon War, Haret Hreik was devastated. Imagine entire blocks reduced to rubble. Close to 200 buildings were destroyed in the first week alone. By the end, over 700 structures were damaged or destroyed in Haret Hreik. Thousands of civilians were injured or killed. The town has since been rebuilt, rising from the ashes. Now, Haret Hreik is a bustling suburb south of Beirut, a mix of Shia and Maronite Christian residents. It’s part of the Dahieh suburbs and falls within the Baabda District. Haret Hreik has a rich history. It once was a quiet agricultural village. Over time, it transformed. Refugees from Southern Lebanon sought refuge here, contributing to its growth and urban development. This influx shaped Haret Hreik into the vibrant neighborhood it is today, a vital part of the Dahieh area. Haret Hreik is also known as the headquarters of Hezbollah. This has made it a focal point in regional conflicts, including the 2006 Lebanon War with Israel. Beyond its political significance, Haret Hreik boasts a thriving cultural scene. It’s home to Umam Documentation & Research. This organization preserves Lebanon’s historical archives and operates The Hangar, a contemporary arts space. Think exhibitions, talks, and a constant buzz of activity. Haret Hreik also has three major libraries, teeming with students and researchers. Two main hospitals, Sahel General Hospital and Bahman Hospital, serve the community. And for the football fans, Haret Hreik is home to Shabab Al Sahel FC, a team in the Lebanese Premier League.
