Did you know the Harding Theater once hosted the Grateful Dead? Right here on Divisadero Street this magnificent building stands a testament to San Francisco’s rich history. The Harding Theater opened its doors in 1926 a grand movie palace designed by the Reid Brothers. Its Gothic and Moorish architecture captivated audiences drawn to its opulent interior. Colleen Moore starred in the premiere film Irene. For decades the Harding showcased films. The Lamplighters Music Theatre even graced its stage from 1961 to 1968. But the Harding’s story doesn’t end there. The Grateful Dead played two legendary shows here in 1971. Their November 7th performance included their first-ever rendition of Hideaway. The theater’s remarkable stage and fly system were key to its versatility. This allowed for both film screenings and live performances. Imagine the energy of those concerts filling this very space! From the mid-1970s to 2004 the Harding Theater served as a church. It was a surprising but fitting transition given the building’s inherent grandeur. In 2004 developers purchased it for $1.6 million. Plans to convert it into condominiums faced significant opposition from preservationists. They fought hard to save this iconic landmark. Ultimately a compromise was reached. The theater’s facade and interior detailing were saved. Now it houses Emporium Arcade Bar a vibrant venue featuring vintage arcade games a full bar and live music. The Harding Theater’s journey from movie palace to church to arcade bar showcases its enduring spirit. It’s a place where history and entertainment intertwine a true San Francisco gem. Step inside and feel the echoes of the past the music the laughter. The Harding Theater’s story continues.
