In the heart of Hiroshima, a solitary weeping willow stands as a silent witness. This willow graces the grounds of Hara-Minami Elementary School. It’s a poignant reminder of the resilience of life in the face of devastation. Hara-Minami Elementary School wasn’t always a place of quiet reflection. During World War II, it played a unique role in the city’s wartime efforts. Established in April 1943 as the Girls’ School of Hiroshima Electric Railway, it served a vital purpose. With male streetcar drivers and conductors drafted into military service, young girls stepped in to fill the void. These girls, after graduating elementary school, embarked on a demanding three-year program at Hara-Minami. They split their days between classroom studies and operating the city’s vital streetcar network. As the war intensified, their workload increased dramatically. They often found themselves working from dawn till dusk, keeping Hiroshima connected. On that fateful day in August 1945, most of the school’s 300 students were either on duty or in their dormitory, located 2.1 kilometers from the hypocenter. Tragically, twenty-nine students and one teacher lost their lives. Yet, amid the unimaginable destruction, the spirit of these young women endured. Just three days later, students who had escaped serious injury bravely returned to work. They resumed streetcar operations between Koi and Nishitenma, ensuring that life in Hiroshima could begin to move forward. Hara-Minami Elementary School stands not only as a testament to the horrors of war but also to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. The weeping willow, the sole survivor of a once-lush walkway, serves as a symbol of hope and remembrance. It reminds us of the lives lost and the indomitable spirit of those who survived, rebuilding their lives and their city from the ashes.
