In the heart of George Town, the Har Yang Sit Teik Tong Yeoh Kongsi whispers tales of resilience and kinship. The Har Yang Sit Teik Tong Yeoh Kongsi stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Yeoh clan. It’s also known as the Yeoh Clan Association. This magnificent structure, located at the corner of Chulia Street and Victoria Street, embodies the rich history and cultural heritage of the Hokkien clansmen bearing the Yeoh surname. Founded in 1836, the Har Yang Sit Teik Tong Yeoh Kongsi served a dual purpose. It provided a sacred space for the worship of their patron deities, Sye Thow Kong and Poe Seng Tai Tay. It also offered vital support and welfare services to newly arrived Yeoh clansmen, helping them navigate the challenges of a new land. The clan temple itself, dating back to 1841, has witnessed the dramatic transformation of George Town’s waterfront. Originally built right on the waterfront, complete with its own jetty, the Har Yang Sit Teik Tong Yeoh Kongsi later found itself separated from the sea by land reclamation. This resulted in the creation of Victoria Street, pushing the shoreline further away. The temple’s two-story structure boasts intricate porcelain and chien nien (broken pottery) ornamentation. These adornments depict mythical dragons and scenes from the timeless Chinese classic, “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” Inside, altar chambers on the upper floor honor Yeoh ancestors, patron deities, and the god of prosperity. The ground floor houses storage rooms and meeting rooms. The courtyard features oleander bushes, their vibrant pink flowers adding a touch of beauty to the historical setting. A well in front of the temple serves as a reminder of the past. Once, a stage stood nearby, where Chinese operas were performed to entertain the gods. Sadly, this stage was destroyed during the Second World War and never rebuilt. The Hall of Four Knows, the Yeoh ancestral hall, commemorates a distinguished Yeoh ancestor who rose to the rank of mandarin in the imperial court. The Har Yang Sit Teik Tong Yeoh Kongsi stands as a proud symbol of heritage and unity. It’s a place where the Yeoh clan’s history comes alive.
