Feel the wind whipping past you here at Hanthana 1. This isn’t just any peak. Hanthana 1 is one of the many summits of the Hanthana mountain range. It’s southwest of Kandy close to the University of Peradeniya. Declared an environmental protection area in February 2010 Hanthana 1 is a hiker’s paradise.

Hanthana 1 boasts stunning views. From its heights you can see Kandy sprawling below. You might even spot the Sandagiri Seya a large white dagaba. On exceptionally clear days the Knuckles Range is visible. Even the iconic triangle of Adam’s Peak might be seen. It’s a panorama that’s captivated moviemakers. Hanthana 1 has often been chosen as a backdrop for films and music videos.

The hike to Hanthana 1 starts about 6 kilometers from Kandy’s center. The trail begins near a mountain pass. This pass is on the road to Galaha. The climb is challenging but rewarding. It covers nearly 200 meters in altitude. The last part is steep. The final ascent to the peak near the broadcasting towers is strenuous. But the views are breathtaking.

Reaching the top you’ll find yourself on a ridge. This ridge stretches to the rocks of Hanthana’s World’s End. There are many vantage points. You can see the cliffs of Katusu Konda and Uragala. These are two of the highest peaks in the range. These peaks are easily recognizable. They have sharp cliffs and a triangular shape. Their western slopes are almost vertical.

Hanthana 1 is more than just a great hike. It’s part of a larger ecosystem. It’s an environmental protection area. Its forests shelter a variety of plants and animals. This includes monkeys leopards and birds. Hanthana 1 plays an important role. It’s crucial for the water supply of the Mahaweli River. Remember this on your way down. You’re standing on a crucial piece of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty. This is Hanthana 1.
