Before hanseWasser, the Amt für Stadtentwässerung und Abfallwirtschaft handled wastewater. It became the Bremer Entsorgungsbetriebe or BEB. The creation of hanseWasser Bremen GmbH focused efforts solely on urban drainage.
hanseWasser now manages wastewater beyond Bremen’s borders. It handles waste from Lemwerder, Lilienthal, Ritterhude, and other communities. Even parts of Oyten and Achim rely on hanseWasser’s services.
The company operates two main treatment plants. The Seehausen plant is the larger of the two. It processes wastewater from most of Bremen. It also serves neighboring towns in Lower Saxony. Wastewater from across the Weser flows to Seehausen through underwater pipes. This plant treats 130000 cubic meters daily.
The Farge plant is smaller but vital. It cleans wastewater from Blumenthal and Vegesack. It also serves parts of Burglesum, Lemwerder, and Schwanewede. Farge handles about 16000 cubic meters each day.
