Standing before the eight-story Hans Rosling Center you will notice its architecture. It is a testament to cross-disciplinary collaboration. The 290,000-square-foot building fosters interaction between various departments. These include the School of Public Health and the Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation or IHME. IHME provides crucial data on global health issues. They even cover COVID-19.
Derek Fulwiler emphasizes the Hans Rosling Center’s role. He is the director of strategy for UW’s Population Health Initiative. “That ecosystem now has a single home” says Fulwiler. “A place for out-of-the-box creative conversations.” The building’s design promotes engagement. Interlocking rectangular volumes house research offices. Public spaces and classrooms fill the ground floor.
Miller Hull designed the Hans Rosling Center with engagement in mind. Baleiko describes it as a series of neighborhoods. Different office types mix with shared meeting spaces. A central staircase encourages movement and interaction. This design fosters collaboration among occupants and visitors.
Consider the challenging site. There was a thirty-foot grade change. The architects created three ground floors at different elevations. Each floor has its own entrance. A covered porch offers refuge from Seattle’s rain. Baleiko notes the building is porous and accessible. People can move through it from all sides. The west facade features deep fins. These fins create a rippling effect and mitigate glare.
The Hans Rosling Center used an innovative design-build approach. This approach saved money. Miller Hull and Lease Crutcher Lewis collaborated closely. Trade partners and university stakeholders also joined in. The team shared risks and rewards. This ensured everyone was invested in the project’s success.
Funding came from various sources. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave a $210 million grant. The Washington State legislature and UW also contributed. The risk-reward structure streamlined decision-making. It also reduced value engineering. Brian Aske from Lease Crutcher Lewis praised the camaraderie. The building achieved LEED Gold certification.
