Unfortunately the original building suffered from subsidence because of its location next to the canal. The London County Council decided to build a new school in 1931-2. The new Hanover Primary School was built slightly west of the original site. This required demolishing not only the old school. Twelve houses in the terrace to the west also had to go.
Even with the extra space, the site remained restricted. The new school followed the multi-storey design of the old Board school. This was despite a trend towards single-storey primary schools. A large playground was created east of the new building. This offered more space than the original school. It allowed for lower-density classrooms.
The design of Hanover Primary School reflected contemporary educational ideas. Its single-banked classrooms open onto balconies. These overlook the canal. The building’s architecture is a mix of Arts and Crafts and stripped-classical styles. The school is built below Noel Road on a terrace. It sits next to the Regent’s Canal. The main entrance from Noel Road is at first-floor level. The north elevation has five bays treated individually. The central bay features a portico. It is formed by tall square piers of mixed red and blue brick.
Inside Hanover Primary School, original features remain. Parquet floors adorn the halls and corridors. Blue cream and orange dado tiling adds character. The stairs retain their plain metal banisters with wooden handrails.
