Magnificent, isn’t it? Hangar Y stands before us a testament to human innovation. It is a unique blend of history, art, and technology. Hangar Y is more than just a building. It is a cultural destination.

Let’s step back in time to 1878. The Universal Exhibition in Paris showcased the world’s advancements. It was during this time that Hangar Y was constructed. Henri de Dion, the architect, used parts from the Galerie des Machines. This made Hangar Y the world’s first airship hangar.

Imagine the excitement as the first dirigible balloon took flight from here. On August 9, 1884, Hangar Y hosted the world’s first closed-circuit airship flight. Hangar Y quickly gained prominence.

However, Hangar Y’s glory faded over the years. After serving as the first Air and Space Museum, it closed in 1981. It fell into neglect. The French Ministry of Culture acquired the site in 1990. In 2000, it was listed as a historic monument.

But Hangar Y was not destined to remain forgotten. A rehabilitation project was launched in 2018. After 40 years of slumber, Hangar Y has been reborn. It reopened to the public in March 2023.

Today, Hangar Y is a cultural and events center. The Art Explora Foundation curates exhibitions that blend art, science, and nature. The hangar hosts two exhibitions each year.

Look up at the glass roof. Notice the light flooding the space. The iron structure and exposed brickwork add to the grandeur. Suspended from above, you can see “Willing To Be Vulnerable.” This monumental installation by Korean artist Lee Bul pays homage to the site’s history. It resembles a dirigible balloon.

Step outside into the 9-hectare park. An outdoor art trail features works by contemporary artists. Admire sculptures and installations that interact with nature. Christian Boltanski’s twinkling bells create a bewitching atmosphere.

Hangar Y also offers a mixed-reality experience. “L’Épopée du Hangar Y” lets you relive the site’s mythical history. Experience the design and launch of the airship La France.

Don’t miss the opportunity to dine at Le Perchoir Y. This bistronomic restaurant offers a delightful culinary experience. Enjoy the panoramic view of the Chalais pond.

Hangar Y is a place where history and modernity converge. Technical prowess meets art and nature. It is a destination for families, art lovers, science enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Take your time to explore Hangar Y. Allow yourself to be transported by its magic.
