Damaged during the attack on December 7 1941 Hangar 5 stands as a testament to resilience. This is Hangar 5 at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay. It’s one of five hangars built between 1941 and 1943. All are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. They’re key buildings in the Aviation Historic District. They are part of the Naval Air Station Kaneohe National Historic Landmark.

Hangar 5 holds a unique place in history. Unlike the other hangars it was designed specifically for landplanes. Its angled position sets it apart from the seaplane hangars nearby. Yet its size and design are remarkably similar to those earlier structures. Its construction followed the devastating Japanese attack. The steel for Hangar 5 was initially intended for Wake and Midway Islands. Delivery was disrupted however the materials found a new purpose here.

The hangar’s story is interwoven with the events of World War II. Its design reflects the evolution of naval aviation. Repairs and maintenance conducted within its walls were vital to the war effort. Along with the other hangars Hangar 5 showcases the significance of aviation at the Naval Air Station. After 1952 it continued its service as a crucial part of the Marine Corps installation. Hangar 5’s history continues to this day. The hangar was almost lost to demolition plans. Historic Hawai’i Foundation advocated against this. The foundation supports an alternative location minimizing the impact on historical resources.

Today as you stand before Hangar 5 you’re not just observing a building. You’re experiencing a living piece of history. A silent witness to the battles fought and won. A symbol of American strength and resilience. Hangar 5’s story deserves to be preserved and celebrated. It is a vital part of this island’s rich heritage. A reminder of the sacrifices made and the battles won.
