Its story began not in Auckland but further afield. A short-term mission trip to the Philippines sparked a life-changing experience. The Holy Spirit called those involved back to full-time ministry. This led to the establishment of Hands of Hope Ministries a registered charity in New Zealand.
Back in the Philippines they started with children’s services. Soon adults joined leading to the launch of adult services as well. By late 2010 nearly 60 people were baptized marking a pivotal moment. Construction then began on a multipurpose centre thanks to a generous land donation. This expansion enabled them to conduct their first medical mission.
The Hands of Hope journey is remarkable. It encompasses child sponsorship programs and church planting in surrounding villages. Youth groups ventured into remote mountainous areas to minister to tribal communities. The focus shifted to empowering locals to lead their own ministry. The Hands of Hope also purchased land to grow rice. This initiative aimed for greater self-sufficiency.
The Hands of Hope Christian Centre’s ties to the Philippines are deep. It supports Hands of Hope Faith Academy a school established to provide quality education to underprivileged children. The academy started with Grades 1-3. Over time it expanded its programs adding kindergarten and eventually Grades 1-6. It even acquired land for future high school expansion.
The Covid-19 pandemic presented challenges causing temporary closures. However Hands of Hope persevered. Online classes were implemented during lockdowns. The academy celebrated its 10th anniversary demonstrating its resilience. The Hands of Hope community in New Zealand played a vital role in supporting their work.
