Curiosity stirred within me as we approached Handley United Methodist Church. This church, nestled in what was once the railroad town of Handley, has witnessed over a century of history. Handley United Methodist Church was organized in 1877, shortly after the town itself was established. The first minister, Reverend J.J. Cannafax, wore two hats. He also served as the town’s first school teacher. Imagine the early days, with services held in a one-room schoolhouse. This continued until a Union Church was built in 1882. The Methodists shared this space with Baptists, Presbyterians, and other denominations until 1907. A tangible piece of that shared history remains. The bell at Handley United Methodist Church is from the old Union Church. Though Handley is now a part of Fort Worth, Handley United Methodist Church retains its unique identity. It stands as a testament to its rich heritage and its ongoing tradition of service to the community.
