The Handley Power Plant didn’t begin as the massive natural gas-fueled facility you see today. No. Its story began much earlier. In 1902 the Northern Texas Traction Company built a smaller plant. This plant was revolutionary. It was the first outdoor steam electric generating station of its type in the nation. This pioneering plant sat beside Lake Erie a tranquil body of water. The lake provided crucial cooling water for the plant.
Lake Erie wasn’t just a source of water. It was the heart of a thriving community. The Traction Company developed a trolley park and resort. Visitors enjoyed a roller skating rink a dance hall and restaurants. The lake and pavilion offered a welcome respite. Handley boomed becoming a popular destination. Imagine crowds enjoying the amusements the lively atmosphere. It was an early version of a modern theme park.
Tragedy struck when a fire damaged the pavilion. The Interurban railway declined eventually ceasing operation in 1934. The Handley community faded as traffic shifted away. But the power plant remained a steadfast presence. It continued to expand meeting the growing energy demands of the region.
In 1956 Lake Arlington replaced Lake Erie. The old lake was drained. The Handley Power Plant adapted thriving on a new source of cooling water. Today Constellation Energy Generation owns and operates this facility. It’s a three-unit 1265-megawatt natural gas-fueled station. It provides electricity to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.
