Clank. A metal groan echoed across the Bremerhaven harbor. The Handkurbelkran, a relic of a bygone era, stood sentinel. This isn’t just any crane. The Handkurbelkran whispers stories of a time when muscle and ingenuity moved mountains, or at least, heavy cargo. Built in 1939/40 by Orenstein & Koppel AG in Lübeck, this crane is a testament to German engineering. It served the Yachtwerft Kurt Bartels in Elsfleth until 1972. Imagine the yachts it helped build, the dreams it launched.

The Handkurbelkran boasts a 360-degree range of motion. This was thanks to its clever all-wheel drive system and a cone-gear reversing transmission. It could even pull two or three loaded freight cars on level ground. Its power source? A twin-cylinder horizontal reversing steam engine, nestled within the crane operator’s cabin, shielded from the elements. Picture the operator in that cabin, controlling the crane’s movements with levers and gears, a symphony of steam and steel.

This crane wasn’t about brute force alone. Precision was key. The hoisting gear, a combination of rope drum, spur gear with hand brake, and pinion, allowed for precise control. A powerful foot brake regulated the lifting and lowering speed. This ensured the safe handling of loads up to three tons, extending out to six meters. Today, the Handkurbelkran rests on the tracks of the former western quay in the southern part of the Old Harbor. It’s a silent giant, a reminder of the ingenuity and hard work that shaped Bremerhaven’s maritime history. Look closely. You can almost see the ghosts of workers past, their hands on the crank, their muscles straining against the weight. They built more than just ships; they built a legacy.
