Established on October 10 1919 Han Chiang School stands proudly before you. A testament to the enduring spirit of the Teochew community in Penang. This isn’t just a school it’s a legacy. A living history etched in brick and mortar. Founded by the Teochew Association of Penang and Lim Lean Teng. Han Chiang School initially occupied a humble space on Chulia Street.

World War II briefly interrupted its mission. The school building however survived the conflict. Instruction resumed shortly after the war’s end. Lim Lean Teng’s vision expanded. He established Han Chiang High School in 1946. Recognizing the growing student population he generously donated 33 acres of land. This significant contribution facilitated the construction of the high school in 1950. A statue honoring Lim Lean Teng stands as a permanent tribute. It was unveiled by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman.

By 1959 Han Chiang Primary School was bursting at the seams. More of the donated land was allocated to it. In 1961 it transitioned into a national-type school becoming SJK(C) Han Chiang. The 1970s saw enrollment soar to 1700 students. Further expansion occurred in 1995 with the completion of a new three-story building.

The Han Chiang Board of Directors made a bold move in 1999. They established Han Chiang College. Officially recognized in 2000 the college quickly achieved remarkable feats. It launched HCTV News the first news broadcasting company established by a Malaysian college. SJK(C) Han Chiang also made headlines winning four gold medals in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools. This was an unprecedented achievement for a Malaysian school.

Han Chiang School’s collective history is rich with milestones. The annual celebration on July 15 remembers Lim Lean Teng and unites all three schools under its legacy. The 2010 grand celebration marking 90 years of SJK(C) Han Chiang 60 years of Han Chiang High School and 10 years of Han Chiang College was a truly memorable event. Thousands of alumni gathered for a grand dinner graced by the Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Today Han Chiang School remains a beacon of education. It stands as a symbol of perseverance innovation and community spirit. A symbol of growth and development. A beacon of learning for generations to come.
