Did you know that Hampton’s charm isn’t just its beautiful beach? Hampton, a suburb nestled in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, boasts a rich history intertwined with market gardens, seaside picnics, and a touch of regal renaming. Located just 14 kilometers southeast of Melbourne’s Central Business District, Hampton started as a humble supplier of fruits and vegetables in the 1840s and 1850s. Imagine Melburnians flocking to Picnic Point on Hampton’s bay foreshore for day trips. The arrival of the railway line to Brighton Beach in the 1860s further fueled this seaside escape. The railway extended to Sandringham in 1887, with a station initially named Retreat after a local hotel. But fate, or rather, the wealthy landowners, favored the name Hampton. They found it more regal, borrowing it from a local market gardener, Dyas Hampton. And so, Picnic Point’s station, and the area itself, became Hampton. Today, Hampton is a vibrant hub, a far cry from its market garden origins. Hampton Street, the main thoroughfare, is lined with over 50 cafes and restaurants, alongside fashionable boutiques, a testament to its evolution. The Hampton Rovers AFL Football Club calls this suburb home, competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association and SMJFL.
