Envision a building where justice meets sustainability, that’s the Hammond Federal Courthouse. Located at 5400 Federal Plaza, this courthouse stands on a 6.9-acre site. It is bordered by Hohman Avenue, Clinton Street, Lyman Avenue, and East Douglas Street.

This isn’t just any courthouse. The Hammond Federal Courthouse is home to three District courtrooms. It also houses two Magistrate and Bankruptcy courtrooms. Completed in 2002, the building quickly gained recognition.

Its awards include the Outstanding Building of the Year award. It also received a 360 Performance Award. These accolades celebrated its sustainable practices and tenant satisfaction. The Building Owners and Managers Association gave these awards in 2010 and 2011.

The Hammond Federal Courthouse earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification. This recognized its efficient operations and maintenance. In 2009, it improved its ENERGY STAR rating.

Looking closer, you’ll notice the architectural details. The entrance faces east across the landscape. The horizontal emphasis echoes the Midwest prairie. Limestone and pre-cast cladding form the exterior. Aluminum windows add a modern touch.

Inside the Hammond Federal Courthouse, the courtrooms are impressive. English brown-oak paneling and millwork create a distinguished atmosphere. State-of-the-art audio/visual technology ensures proceedings run smoothly. The innovative circular layout is quite unique. The witness stand sits at the center. It is positioned between the judge and the curved jury box.

Parking is convenient at the Hammond Federal Courthouse. A free public parking lot is east of the building. You can find it on Douglas Street. Public hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Remember, this excludes federal holidays.

The Hammond Federal Courthouse accommodates the needs of the U.S. Courts and related federal agencies. The U.S. Marshals Service also has a presence here. Their office is located in Suite 1200.

Don’t miss the sustainable landscaping. Master Gardener Rich Falzone manages the courthouse grounds. It’s home to several rare species of butterflies. This adds a touch of nature to the legal setting.
