Remember this day. Today, we discover the natural sanctuary of Hammersbecker Wiesen. This protected area offers a tranquil escape. It’s a place where wildlife thrives.

Hammersbecker Wiesen sits in Bremen’s Aumund-Hammersbeck district. It’s part of Vegesack. This nature reserve spans 25.8 hectares. It’s a haven for diverse flora and fauna. The area was initially 27.2 hectares. In March 2014, it was adjusted to its current size.

Imagine this area in 1986. On July 22, Hammersbecker Wiesen officially became a protected area. The Senator for Environment, Building, and Transport oversees its preservation. It’s documented as number 6 in Bremen’s nature conservation registry.

The Hammersbecker Wiesen borders Lower Saxony to the north. It features rich wet and marshy grasslands. Hedges and trees divide the landscape. Reedbeds and tall herb communities add to its diversity. The Beckedorfer Beeke stream meanders through it. This natural brook enriches the floodplain. In the south, there is a former clay pit called Pottkuhle. Alder and willow bushes surround it.

Angus cattle graze the grasslands. This extensive grazing helps to maintain the area’s ecological balance. Hedges of blackthorn, blackberry, elder, hawthorn, and dog rose thrive here. Ivy, hops, and honeysuckle intertwine. Oak, hornbeam, alder, and willow trees also grow. The ground layer hosts primroses and buttercups. You might spot moschatel, wood anemones, and greater stitchwort. Hairy wood-rush also grows here.

In the wet meadows, marsh marigolds bloom. Cuckoo flowers and irises add color. Water forget-me-nots are also present. Greater and lesser rattle plants populate these meadows. Brooklime and creeping Jenny spread. Various sedges and rushes thrive too. These include two-rowed sedge, bladder sedge, and thread rush. The Hammersbecker Wiesen is home to various orchids. It has Bremen’s largest broad-leaved marsh orchid population. Higher, drier spots host meadowfoam and creeping buttercup. You may see also sharp buttercup and meadow clover. Swamps support sedge beds and tubular water-dropwort. Floating sweet-grass is also present. A 2012 biotope mapping identified 270 plant species.

The Hammersbecker Wiesen is a habitat for beetles and hoverflies. Numerous songbirds nest here. These include blackcaps, wrens, and dunnocks. The area is significant for meadow birds. Swamps and water bodies are home to amphibians. Grass frogs and common toads have large populations.

Though access is restricted, you can view the Hammersbecker Wiesen from nearby public roads. Take a moment to appreciate the natural beauty. Consider the importance of preserving such habitats. The Hammersbecker Wiesen shows Bremen’s commitment to nature conservation.
