We stand before this church, a testament to a man’s faith, his community activism, and the complex legacy of urban renewal in San Francisco. Wilbur Wyatt Hamilton, born in Texas in 1931, found his calling amidst the vibrant streets of San Francisco’s Western Addition. His father, also a Bishop in the Church of God in Christ, purchased a church vacated by the Japanese community during World War II, nurturing a spiritual seed that would blossom in Wilbur. Young Wilbur witnessed the upheaval and sadness of Japanese internment, a time he later described as filled with “an awful feeling.” The Western Addition became his home, his community. Years later, as a respected figure in the community, Hamilton found himself at odds with Justin Herman, the director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency. During a heated meeting about the controversial urban renewal project, Herman challenged Hamilton to take charge. Hamilton accepted, leading the A2 phase of the project. This decision led to a heart-wrenching sacrifice. His father’s church, the same church that had nurtured his faith, was demolished as part of the renewal plan. The Hamilton Memorial Church of God in Christ, which we stand before, rose from the ashes of this loss. It became a symbol of resilience, a beacon of faith in a changing landscape. Hamilton, consecrated as Bishop in 1987, poured his energy into his congregation and the wider community. He served as the founding Pastor of Hamilton Memorial Church of God in Christ, leaving an indelible mark on San Francisco’s spiritual landscape. His influence extended beyond the church walls. He held national appointments within the Church of God in Christ, and for a decade, he directed the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, managing a $2.5 billion urban revitalization program.
