Grivesnes, a village about 35 kilometers from Amiens, was once the scene of fierce battles. During World War I, it stood as a bulwark against the German advance towards Paris. In March 1918, savage fighting engulfed the village, house by house, garden by garden. A small group of men, barricaded in the Grivesnes château, resisted until reinforcements arrived. The village was devastated, the château and church partially destroyed.
