Remember that time you almost missed your flight? Well this is nothing like that. This is the Hallenbad Ost in Kassel.
This isn’t just any building. It’s a piece of Kassel’s history. Built in 1929 in the Bauhaus style the Hallenbad Ost opened in June 1930. Imagine the excitement. A brand new public swimming pool.
The design was a collaboration. Baurat Ernst Rothe started the plans. Bauoberrat Gerhard Jobst made crucial changes. The building’s facade is a protected landmark. It’s gorgeous. Really.
Kassel was booming at the turn of the 20th century. The population exploded. People needed places to relax. This pool filled that need. It even had a connection to the nearby gasworks. A 500-meter pipe provided steam and hot and cold water. Pretty clever.
The Hallenbad Ost was a multi-purpose pool. A 25-meter by 12-meter pool was perfect for swimming lessons and club training. But it also provided something else. Hygiene. Many homes lacked private bathrooms. The Hallenbad Ost even offered “public bath tubs”. In its first year 230000 people visited.
World War II damaged the building. It reopened in 1949 after repairs. It received the “Ost” or “East” designation. Two more pools opened in Kassel in 1967 and 1971.
Later a sauna a solarium and even a sunbathing area were added. But by the mid-1990s visitor numbers dropped. People wanted modern water parks. The Hallenbad Ost needed expensive repairs. It closed in 2007.
Then came the revival. After various failed plans the Hallenbad Ost was sold to three Kassel architects. They transformed it into office and event spaces. The renovation was completed in 2020. It even hosted exhibits at the 2022 documenta fifteen. A beer garden was a popular addition. The Hallenbad Ost won a Hessian Monument Protection Prize for its transformation.
