Wasn’t this once a bustling marketplace? The Halle Secrétan stands before us a testament to Parisian history. Built in 1868 by Victor Baltard the same architect behind the sadly demolished central markets of Paris this covered market hall boasts a stunning metal structure. Its location? The former gallows grounds of Montfaucon a chilling detail.

This Halle Secrétan is unique. It’s the sole survivor of ten similar halls Baltard designed in Paris. After years of emptiness it reopened in 2015 following extensive renovations. Gone are the market stalls replaced by a large supermarket a restaurant and a sports center. Yet the beauty of Baltard’s metalwork remains a focal point inside the supermarket.

The Halle Secrétan’s transformation wasn’t without controversy. Its renovation involved significant changes. A basement was excavated for commercial use. The ground floor was demolished and rebuilt also for commercial purposes. A partial first floor was added. Some residents criticized the choice of a supermarket over a market for local or organic products. They felt the hall’s essence had been sold off.

Despite this debate the Halle Secrétan lives on. A modern sports center and a municipal library now share space with the supermarket. Its glass facade opens onto the Rue de Meaux replacing the original brick walls. The wide sidewalks encourage strolling. Shops surround the structure adding to its renewed vitality.

The Halle Secrétan’s story is a blend of past and present. It’s a reminder of Paris’s rich history. Its ongoing use shows Paris’s ability to adapt and reinvent itself while preserving architectural treasures like this remarkable market hall. It continues to be a vibrant hub in the 19th arrondissement. A testament to resilience innovation and the enduring spirit of Parisian life.
