Long before European settlers arrived Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki the local Māori iwi called this area home. Their ancestors arrived around the year 1300. They established thriving settlements around the Tīkamau River. Ōhuiarangi Pigeon Mountain was a significant pā a fortified village. It was a vital site for gathering food and resources.

The mountain itself is a volcanic remnant. It erupted around 23400 years ago. Imagine the power. Much of the northern half was quarried from 1913 to the 1970s. It drastically altered the landscape.

Later the bay was known as Barn Bay or Hancock’s Bay. It was named after a long time tenant of a large farm. In the early 20th century locals enjoyed picnics here. This peaceful spot became a popular recreational area. The opening of the King George V Memorial Health Camp in 1949 further enhanced its popularity. The camp provided recuperative care for children. It even led to the bay being known as Camp Bay for a time.

The name Half Moon Bay however only appeared in 1967. A large-scale marina development transformed the area. The marina officially opened in 1972. The Bucklands Beach Yacht Club relocated here in 1988. It continues to be a focal point of the community. Ferry services connecting Half Moon Bay to Auckland City Centre started in 1999. It improved access and made this stunning location even more accessible.
