A bronze woman veiled in mystery. This is the Haláruslány kút. The Fishmonger’s Fountain. More than just a pretty face it’s a Budapest landmark. A testament to the city’s rich history.

The Haláruslány kút wasn’t always here on Kristóf tér. Originally crafted in 1862 by László Dunaiszky. It stood proudly at the Hal tér the Fish Market. Imagine the bustling sounds of that era. The cries of vendors. The splashing of fish. This beautiful fountain was the centerpiece. It replaced an older fountain. That one was made of stone. It had German and Hungarian inscriptions. Now it’s lost to time.

The Haláruslány kút itself is a masterpiece. A draped female figure holding a fish. She stands on a tiered base. The base’s design is a marvel. Square at the bottom. It flares out to a graceful shape. Ornate carvings decorate it. Bronze spouts shaped like fish heads add to its charm. These charming details were added by András Gubicz. He crafted them from cast iron. Intricate cartouches surround the basin.

But the Haláruslány kút’s story isn’t just about its beauty. It’s a story of survival. The construction of the Elizabeth Bridge changed things. The Hal tér was demolished. The fountain was moved. In 1899 it found a new home. It sat quietly in the Népliget. Then it vanished. Records lost it to oblivion. It was forgotten.

Years later György Rajna rediscovered the forgotten fountain. He found it in pieces in a warehouse. The pieces were incomplete. They were scattered and damaged. Thanks to Sándor Lovas’s skill. The fountain was restored to its former glory. In 1985 it returned. This time it found a spot near its original location. A memorial plaque now tells its story.

The Haláruslány kút is more than just a water feature. It’s a symbol of resilience. A piece of Budapest’s past. A reminder that even forgotten treasures can be reborn. So next time you’re in Budapest. Seek out this fascinating fountain. Listen to its silent story. Feel the history beneath your fingertips.
